UNIONTOWN, OH (WOIO) -

In Uniontown, two officers are heroes after saving an unconscious man from a burning car.

Sgt. Mike Batchik was called to the Hartville Market on Monday morning for reports of two cars on fire.

When he arrived, people on the scene were trying to free a man from one of the cars, but couldn't get to him.

Captain Dave Brown arrived to assist Sgt. Batchik. They used a window punch and fire extinguisher to break out the drivers side window, and freed the 68-year-old man from the burning car.

The man had some kind of medical emergency and passed out behind the wheel while pulling into a parking space. His foot hit the gas and slammed into the car in front of him. Both cars caught on fire. Two surrounding cars were also damaged.

Sgt. Batchik and Capt. Brown were not injured. The victim was taken to the hospital and released. He has minor injuries from when he was pulled out.

Sgt. Batchik is a 14-year veteran of the force and Capt. Brown has been serving for 27 years. Both will be awarded next year with the Life Saving Award.
