Convicted rapist sentenced to life in prison without parole

On Tuesday, a Cuyahoga County Judge sentenced Westlake resident and former teacher Joseph Scherma to life in prison without parole for the rape of two boys.

Scherma, 67, pleaded guilty in August to two counts each of rape, kidnapping, and gross sexual imposition for the rape two boys, ages 9 and 12. He also pleaded guilty to three counts of disseminating material harmful to juveniles.

On May 2, Scherma was arrested after a warrant was served to his home. The victims are both relatives, one incident occurred in February 2014, and the other in 2013.

In 2006, Scherma retired from Westlake Schools were he taught language arts.
