(WOIO) - Thousands of passengers were grounded or diverted to different cities while making their way to Chicago this morning, including many at Cleveland Hopkins Airport.
Police say the inconvenience was caused by a man set a fire and tried to commit suicide at an Illinois air traffic control center. The incident halted all flights in and out of the countries busiest hubs.
Hundreds of flights were canceled at O'Hare and Midway Airports.
Seventeen flights were diverted to Cleveland until the situation was brought to an end.
Hopkins says there were six cancellations and seven delays. Anyone headed to the airport is encouraged to visit their website before heading out for the lastest on flight times.
With so many flights affected, car rentals were very popular.
Air traffic over Chicago has resumed but at a reduced rate.
