Akron man made deadly ricin in his home

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - Akron man sentenced to six years in prison for possessing the biological toxin ricin for use as a weapon.

Jeff Boyd Levenderis, 58, produced ricin at his home in Akron, sometime after 2000 and kept it in his freezer until it was recovered by FBI agents in January 2011.

He planned to set fire to his house and use the ricin against his stepfather and first responders who might respond to the fire as part of an elaborate suicide plan.

The substance Levenderis made contained hundreds of lethal doses if inhaled or injected.

"This sentence reflects the serious danger Jeff Levenderis posed to our community," said Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. "He produced a dangerous biological weapon that could have been used to harm or kill innocent people."
