Downtown residents allowed back into their apartments after early morning fire

An entire apartment building was evacuated after an early morning fire, but the scene has been cleared and residents allowed to return a few hours later.

Cleveland fire responded to Winton Manor Apartments in downtown just before 5:00 a.m.. Witnesses say smoke went up a trash chute and filled the hallways with smoke.

Dozens of people were awaken out of their sleep and nobody was hurt. Most people waited right outside while some others went home with family members.

The apartment building is located on Prospect Avenue. Part of Prospect was closed from Huron to 14th Street while fire was put out.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
