NEWBURY TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) - The Ohio State Highway Patrol's Chardon Post is investigating a two-vehicle, serious-injury crash that took place on state Route 87, just east of Munn Road, on Tuesday just after 11 a.m.
The OSHP says a Ford F-650 Armored Car, owned by Garda CL Great Lakes and driven by Bobbie Jean Phillips, 25, of Cleveland, was traveling eastbound on SR 87. At the same time, an International dump truck driven by Andrew Housholder, 37, of Roaming Shores, OH, was heading westbound on SR 87.
Troopers say the Armored Car lost control on the wet roadway, rotated and crossed the center line, striking the dump truck. The impact forced the dump truck off the roadway and spill its load of gravel.
The collision and leaking diesel fuel started a fire, but Dave Kelly and Danny Dick (two employees from a local business) used a fire extinguisher to put it out.
According to the OSHP, both vehicles had one passenger. The Armored Car's passenger was Delano Harris, 35, of Euclid, OH. The dump truck passenger was Charles Rohr, 24, of Chardon, OH.
Both the driver and passenger of the dump truck were taken to Hillcrest Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Armored Car was also taken to Hillcrest with serious injuries. The passenger of the Armored Car was taken to Geauga Hospital with minor injuries. No one received burns as a result of the fire.
SR 87 was closed for approximately four hours, due to clean up and oil spilled on the roadway. Ohio EPA was also on scene.
