Opening statements in the trial for man accused of murdering girlfriend's parents

AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

Opening statements began Thursday in Shawn Ford, Jr.'s murder trial.

Jury selection began September 24 and wrapped up Wednesday.

Ford, of Akron, is accused in the brutal slayings of Jeffrey and Margaret Schobert.

He was 18-years-old at the time of his arrest and was dating the Schobert's daughter Chelsea.

Prosecutors say Ford beat the couple to death with a sledgehammer in their New Franklin home on April 2, 2013. He is also accused of assaulting Chelsea on March 23, 2013.

Ford was indicted on numerous charges including aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary,grand theft, and felonious assault.

He could get the death penalty if convicted.
