Cleveland Police Use of Deadly Force Investigation Team is looking into what occurred on October 10, around 7:45 p.m., that led to a Cleveland Officer shooting a suspect during a foot pursuit.
The preliminary investigation reveals that officers responded to the 3300 block of E. 146 with reports of a number of people using bats during a physical altercation and to cause damage to a vehicle.
When officers arrived they spoke to a witness who stated that the suspect had entered a vehicle and was leaving the scene.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle as it backed out of a driveway.
The vehicle continued to back out of the driveway, and attempted to leave the area.
The vehicle then stopped and the suspect was ordered out of the car.
According to officers the male was given several verbal commands to exit the vehicle and to put his hands up but he did not comply.
The suspect then got out of the car and fled to the backyards of nearby homes.
The latest update from police says that an officer chased the suspect on foot and at some point during the pursuit shots were fired and the suspect was struck.
EMS transported the suspect to MetroHealth Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, where he underwent surgery.
The suspect has mostly recently been listed in fair condition and is not being named at this time.
The Cleveland Police Public Information Office says the officer's identity will be released at a later time.
