19 Action News spoke with Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams at the scene of a Saturday morning standoff on Ottawa Road near E. 71 and Harvard which started around 5 a.m.
Apparently the incident started when officers went to the suspect's Ottawa Road residence to execute an arrest warrant after he failed to appear in court on charges involving a vicious dog.
According to Chief Williams, officers encountered the suspect in his driveway and an altercation took place which led to exchange of gunfire.
One officer, wearing a bulletproof vest, was struck in the chest but is uninjured.
SWAT was called in to assist in the ordeal.
Officers believed the suspect had retreated into his home but he later emerged from a backyard nearby.
The suspect was shot as officers worked to take him into custody. He was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
At what time the suspect was taken into to custody is unknown, as is the suspect's condition.
This is the second officer involved shooting in less than 24 hours.
