WILLOUGHBY HILLS, OH (WOIO) -

The Chardon Road bridge was inspected overnight Saturday, after a portion of it fell onto moving traffic earlier in the day. Now officials feel it needs another lookover.

Willoughby Hills Police say around 1 p.m., a chunk of the bridge fell onto a vehicle driving southbound on I-271 in the local lanes. The piece crashed through the windshield, injuring a juvenile and female inside. Police say they received only minor injuries and were treated on the scene.

As a result, there were closures Saturday night for the inspection. According to ODOT, crews closed the two right lanes on the I-271 southbound local lanes at Chardon Road from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. in order to perform bridge maintenance operations. At one point during the closure, crews shifted their efforts and opened the right two lanes, and closed the left lane to work on the bridge.

ODOT says closures are in place again overnight Sunday. Maintenance crews will close the two left lanes on the I-271 northbound local lanes at Chardon Road from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. in order to perform bridge maintenance operations similar to work that was completed Saturday night over the southbound local lanes. At one point during the closure, crews will shift their efforts and open the left two lanes and close the right lane to work on the bridge.
