Family looks for answers in unsolved Akron murder

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - Vernon Appelton died after being shot more than a dozen times by Marriece Ellis, a man he befriended. Vernon Appelton Sr., the dead man's father said, "He didn't have a place to stay, my son extended his hand out, brought him into his home. He would even give him clothes off his back."

Vernon's parents are obviously heartbroken, and the pain grows each day Marriece is on the loose according to the elder Appelton "There were sightings in our local neighborhoods all around and that's what really concerns us."

The murder happened at a house on Diagonal Road, a place there is no good time to be around. Police have been called there 11 times since August. The landlord rented rooms to men.

"They always out here arguing but they were best friends and they always hang with each other. Next thing you know he shot him," said neighbor Jay Rogers.

"We don't want another family to sit here like we're sitting here right now and have to go through this... you can't imagine what we're going through right now," said Vernon Appleton. Ellis is 6' 1" and weighs about 160 pounds.

Appleton's mother made a direct plea to Ellis, "Turn yourself. Vernon didn't deserve that just like you don't deserve what's going to happen to you. But you did what you did to my son and you gotta pay for it."

If you have any information on Ellis, you can call Akron Police at (330)375-2490, the US Marshals at 1-866-4WANTED, or the Summit County Crimestoppers at (330) 434-COPS. You can even text your tip to 274637. Your tip can remain anonymous.
