Newburgh Hts. Police: Alcohol suspected in officer-involved crash on I-77 NB

NEWBURGH HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) - Newburgh Heights Police said one of their officers was attempting to make a traffic stop on I-77N when he was struck from behind by a pickup truck traveling at a high rate of speed around 6:45 p.m. Friday.

The officer's cruiser sustained major damages, and the truck was flipped over. 

Ohio State Highway Patrol says alcohol is suspected. Alcohol could be smelled on the driver's breath.

Shortly before 11 p.m., I-77 northbound reopened. 

OSHP says the driver and Officer Shawn Finch were taken to MetroHealth Hospital. Their conditions are unknown at this time, but the officer is expected to be released soon with bumps and bruises.
