Flu is hitting Cuyahoga County hard

Cuyahoga County Health Officials confirm this is already starting to be a rough flu season.

Over the past three weeks, there have been 309 flu-related hospital admissions. That is 162% higher than last year, a total of 191 more cases.

The previous five-year average for this year is 40 hospitalizations.

429 people visited hospital emergency rooms for flu and flu-like symptoms. That is the highest number in five years and 154% higher than last year.

The rate of school absenteeism due to illness of all types is 5% this past week, 20% higher than the five-year average for this time of year

The number of doctor visits due to influenza-like illness has nearly tripled over the past four weeks.

Symptoms of the flu:

Moderate to high fever

Dry cough

Sore throat

Runny nose

Loss of appetite

Muscle aches

Many conditions — such as a common cold, diarrhea, and vomiting — are called "the flu," but are not influenza. Symptoms of influenza often hit suddenly and cause you to become weaker and weaker.
