Sakeena Majeed, a 24-year-old Muslim woman from Rocky River, is suing Cuyahoga County, the sheriff, and a corrections officer after she claims that during her incarceration at the county jail, she was forced to attend a Christian prayer service.
According to court papers, Majeed said the corrections officer threatened her with solitary confinement if she did not attend the sessions. She added that another officer would harass her when she refused to participate during the sessions.
Majeed is Muslim and said that participating in Christian services is contrary to her religious faith.
Majeed was serving a 60-day sentence after pleading guilty to assault charges.
She served the entire duration from April 11 to June 10, and says she was forced to attend the prayer sessions during her entire incarceration.
She is suing for emotional distress and punitive damages.
