LAKE COUNTY, OH (WOIO) - The family of a Lake County jail inmate is suing. A civil rights and wrongful death suit says Dondrea Carter, 30, did not receive adequate medical care when she complained of chest pain, jaw pain, dizziness, vomiting, and anxiety.
Carter was jailed after a theft arrest on May 16, 2014. According to the suit, she experienced the above symptoms throughout the day on May 25.
That night she asked to see the nurse at the Lake County Adult Detention Facility. The suit alleges she received no treatment and was released with Pepto-Bismol and told to see the doctor in the morning, despite showing classic heart attack symptoms after an EKG.
The doctor was present at the facility but did not see Carter. The suit claims the nurse never told the doctor about Carter's symptoms.
Carter died of a heart attack soon after her examination by the nurse on May 26, 2014.
Lake County, Lake County Sheriff, Prime Health and the jail's nurse and physician have been named in the suit.
