Street crews in Cleveland are dealing with a massive water main break in Little Italy. It happened around 1 p.m. Friday on East 120th Street.

The 24-inch water main that broke has been repaired. However, crews are now filling the hole, which requires a lot of concrete. After that is finished, they will begin cleaning up the street.

For at least a few more days, East 120th is closed between Euclid and Mayfield, and Euclid is also closed between East 118th and Lakeview.

Officials say the sub-freezing temperatures were just too much for the 91-year-old pipe to take.

Authorities say the water was several feet deep in some areas and basements were flooding. About 40 homes were impacted. Many homeowners have concerns about whether flood insurance will cover the damage, since this is considered "surface water."

The cold weather was a major factor preventing crews from repairing the main. When it is this cold, the exposed skin of workers can become frostbitten in minutes. If they get wet, they'll lose body heat at least five times as fast, compared to if they were dry. Workers were encouraged to bring a change of clothing in case they get wet.

The Case Western Reserve campus closed at 2:30 p.m. Friday, due to the break. School officials also advised students and staff not to use the water or restrooms.
