Ohio State and Oregon battled in the first ever College Football Playoff National Championship. Ohio State would come out victorious with a 42-20 win. Ohio State, led by Urban Meyer was looking to win the National Championship for the first time since 2002. Oregon looked to win their first College Football National Championship. The Buckeyes have been to two Championship games since 2002, but fell to LSU and Florida.

The Buckeyes are on a hot streak winning their last 12 games. They're coming off 3 of their biggest wins of the year by defeating rival Michigan, then defeating Wisconsin in shut-out fashion in the Big Ten Championship, and then defeating Alabama in the first round of the playoffs. The Buckeyes are on their third quarterback of the year. Cardale Jones took over for J.T. Barrett in the second half of the Michigan game. Barrett would suffer a season ending injury, leaving the Buckeyes to turn to the former Glenville Tarblooder in the Big Ten Championship. Jones would not disappoint, he led the Buckeyes to a 59-0 victory over Wisconsin.

The Oregon Ducks are 13-1, their only loss coming from Arizona in October. The Ducks are led by current Heisman Trophy award winner, Marcus Mariota. Oregon's fast pace offense has led them to a 13-1 record and scoring 42 or more points in every game since their loss to Arizona.  Oregon defeated Florida State, 59-20 in the first round of the playoffs that took place on New Years' Day. It would be the first time that the Seminoles have lost since 2012.

The Oregon Ducks started the game extremely quickly. Thomas Tyner would fumble the ball and the Buckeyes would recover. The fumble would be reviewed and overturned, the Ducks would retain the ball. The opening drive would be capped off by a Marcus Mariota 7-yard touchdown pass to Keanon Lowe. Ducks take a 7-0 lead.

After a punt by both teams, the Bucks would be pinned at their 3-yard line. Buckeyes quarterback, Cardale Jones made huge throws to get the drive going. They converted on a key fourth down to keep the drive alive and it would pay off, running back Ezekiel Elliott would cap off the 97-yard drive by scoring a 33-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7. The final points of the quarter would come from a Jones 1 yard touchdown pass to Nick Vannett. Buckeyes take a 14-7 lead.

In the second quarter a bad ball exchange from Jones to Elliott caused a fumble and Oregon would recover it. The Oregon Ducks would not cash in for any points though; they went for it on fourth down inside the 5 yard line and could not convert. The Buckeyes took over.

Midway through the second quarter, Jones would find Devin Smith for a 45-yard gain. Jones  would cash in for a 1-yard touchdown to give the Buckeyes  21-7 lead. On the following Oregon drive, Aidan Schnieder would cap off a 12-play drive with a 26-yard field goal. The Buckeyes would lead at halftime, 21-10.

The Buckeyes would start the second half with the ball, but the 8-play drive would be stopped on a Cardale Jones interception. Jones hit Jalin Marshall, but Marshall mishandles the catch and the ball falls into the arms of an Oregon defender.

On the very first offensive play for Oregon in the second half, Mariota finds Byron Marshall for a 70-yard touchdown. Buckeyes remain in the lead with a 21-17 score.

On the following possession, Jones would fumble and the ball and Oregon would recover deep inside Buckeyes territory. The Ducks would turn that into three points on a 23-yard, Schneider field goal. Oregon would cut into Ohio States lead, 21-20 Buckeyes. The Buckeyes would answer with a 12-play, 6:39 drive that will be capped off with Ezekiel Elliott 9-yard touchdown. Elliott ran for 203-yards and 2-touchdowns in the first three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, Elliott picked up where he left off. He would cash in his third touchdown of the game from 2-yards out to give the Buckeyes a 35-20 lead.

Under 9-minutes left in the game, Joey Bosa would deliver a shot to Mariota that would knock him out of the game for a play, the Ducks will punt away the ball to Ohio State with 7:40 left in the game.

The Buckeyes would run 3:17 off the clock, giving Oregon the ball with 4:17 left in the ball game, down 15-points.

The Oregon Ducks offense would not threaten at all, the Buckeyes defense would completely shut down Mariota and Oregon. With under 1 minute left in the game, Elliott would score his fourth touchdown of the game.

The Ohio State Buckeyes win their first National Championship since 2002 by defeating Oregon 42-20.
