Slain Officer Justin Winebrenner to be honored at his high school

BARBERTON, OH (WOIO) - The

and The Barberton High School Athletic Department will be hosting a jersey retirement ceremony Tuesday night at the halftime of the Barberton Magics varsity boys' basketball game against Wadsworth.

Justin Winebrenner's #10 soccer jersey will be retired.

Winebrenner was an Akron Police Officer for seven years and was shot and killed on November 16, 2014 at Papa Don's bar. He was off-duty at the time.

Winebrenner was a two-year letterman and starter for the Magics in soccer. He was a captain for the Magics and a member of the 2000 Sectional Champions which was the school's first team to advance to the District's.

For his efforts during the 2000 season, Winebrenner was selected 1st Team All-District Division I, 1st Team Western Reserve Conference, Cleveland Plain Dealer Player of the Week, and Greater Akron Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Senior All-Star.
 
Kenan Ivery, the man accused of killing Officer Winebrenner, is currently locked up awaiting trial. Prosecutors have said they intend to seek the death penalty against him.
