LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A instructor at a JCPS high school has received an overdue honor.

Master Gunnery Sergeant Frank Herbert is one of the teachers for the Fern Creek High School Marine Corps Junior ROTC program. Eight years ago while serving in Iraq, Herbert was wounded while in combat. During a ceremony on Jan. 14, Herbert received the Purple Heart from the Marine Corps.

Herbert said the award reminds him of the tremendous people he worked with. But he also said that a Purple Heart is not an award Marines go in wishing to receive.

"The Purple Heart is given for meeting certain criteria and that criteria is getting hurt or killed," said Herbert. "You get in a place where the enemy wants to kill you, and sometimes he does. And sometimes you get lucky."

Herbert said it was a privilege to receive the award in front of his students.
