Rice Elementary in Mentor is closing its doors

MENTOR, OH (WOIO) - A Mentor public school is closing its doors at the end of the school year.

In a letter on the school's website, Matthew Miller, Mentor Schools superintendent, says the decision to close Rice Elementary is due to continued declining enrollment.

currently has the lowest enrollment in the district with 282 students.

Additionally, the enrollment projections indicate there is space in neighboring elementary schools to welcome Rice students in 2015-2016.

Rice students have the opportunity to visit their new schools before the end of this school year as part of the transition process.

As for the staff, the goal is to have Rice staff members in openings at other buildings as the reassignment of students and retirements are announced.

A community meeting will be held Monday, February 2 at 6 p.m. at Rice Elementary School to talk about the transition.
