Shaker Heights man killed in hit-and-run, suspect remains on the run

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) - Shaker Heights teacher, 51-year old James Caffrey, was killed when a driver trying to get away from the police jumped a curb and hit him.

Caffrey was out for a jog along South Park when the crash happened around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

University Heights Police pulled over the driver for a traffic violation. The driver took off and ended up in Shaker Heights, striking James Caffrey and leaving the scene.

That driver is still on the loose.

Caffrey and his family are well known in the Cleveland running community.

Jeff Fisher, owner of Cleveland Running Company, says the Caffreys frequent his store.

"It's just a total tragedy," says Fisher.

Caffrey taught 5th grade at Woodbury Elementary School.  Grief counselors were at the school Monday to help students and staff handle the loss.

"Very good guy. Good family. Helped out with his son in cross country. Just a very quality family," says Fisher, "We have a regular Saturday run. We are going to dedicate this Saturday to him. The running community is very tight. People want to express support to the family. We are hoping this is a way to do that."
