NORTH OLMSTED, OH (WOIO) - The house fire in

on Columbia Road was called in just after 6 a.m. Friday and appears to have caught a husband and wife asleep inside, killing the couple.

A neighbor noticed the fire and called 911.

"They are an older couple. Lived here longer than we and we've been here 17 years. Nice couple," said neighbor Judie Flynn.

James Joyce was found dead inside the home. Firefighters were able to get his wife, Gloria, out through the front door, but she later died at Fairview Hospital.

It seems the fire broke out in the back of the house.

Neighbors tell our Scott Taylor they saw smoke and ran over to the front door and opened it. But the smoke was too overwhelming and they couldn't get inside to rescue the couple.

The neighborhood is in shock, but it's one that stays together in crisis.

"I understand that Damian next door found the fire and called Mary Jo two doors down. I am making them cookies now for taking care of their neighbors. It's too bad. We really feel sad about it," said Flynn.

No word yet on what caused the blaze. Initial reports point to an electrical problem.
