OBERLIN, OH (WOIO) - Oberlin Police say an 85-year-old Grafton man has turned himself in after striking a man in a motorized wheelchair Thursday night in the 100 block of E. Lorain.
Police say Eric Gonzalez, 53, was going home around 6:50 p.m., when he was hit by a car. According to police, the wheelchair was in the road, but had reflective material on it. It was severely damaged in the crash.
Although Gonzalez was thrown from his wheelchair, police say he was conscious and alert after the crash. Gonzalez was treated and released from MetroHealth Medical Center.
Police were able to determine the make, model and year of the suspect vehicle from a hubcap left at the scene, along with parts of a fender, headlight and wheel well liner. It was a gold 2010 Toyota Prius.
Shortly after 3 p.m. Friday, the elderly driver came in voluntarily with his lawyer. After providing a statement, he was released.
An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the crash is urged to call Oberlin Police at 440-774-1061.
