SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) - A beloved local teacher was laid to rest this week. A driver struck and killed him while he was out running. A memorial run was held Saturday morning, to remember the life of James Caffrey.
say a hit and run driver killed Caffrey on South Park Boulevard on Saturday, January 24th. The driver abandoned the car and disappeared. Authorities are still looking for that driver.
Caffrey was out for a run, something he truly loved.
"The running community is a very, very tight community and I think everybody just feels for the family. It could happen to anybody at anytime when you're out running," says Jeff Fisher with
The Cleveland Running Company and Moms on the Run organized the event.
As the investigation continues, avid runners say they're continuing to spread the word about running safely.
"Wear lights. Wear bright clothing. Make sure you have reflective stuff on. Take the buds out so that you can hear what's going on around you. Don't assume the car sees you. If you have to step into a pile of snow, you have to step into a pile of snow," says Fisher.
The runners trekked 3.5 miles through Shaker Heights.
