Middleburg Hts. officer resting at home after collision with wrong way driver

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) - The Ohio State Highway Patrol Cleveland Metro Post is investigating a two vehicle crash that occurred on the exit ramp from I-71 southbound to Bagley Road in the City of Middleburg Heights. 

Troopers responded to the scene to find a head on collision between a red 2015 BMW and a Middleburg Heights Police patrol vehicle.

According to authorities, the driver of the BMW was entering I-71 northbound on the southbound exit ramp and collided with the patrol car, which was exiting I-71 from the southbound lanes.

Both drivers were taken to Southwest General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  Investigators say that all parties involved were wearing safety belts.

19 Action News reporter Laura DeMaria has learned that officer was released from the hospital and is resting at home.

Alcohol is believed to have played a role in the crash.  Charges are pending for the driver of the BMW.

The ramp was closed for approximately two hours.

The crash remains under investigation.

Middleburg Heights Police and Fire Departments also assisted with gathering details.
