WICKLIFFE, OH (WOIO) - The 11-year-old Wickliffe girl accused in connection with the death of two-month-old Zuri Whitehead appeared before a judge Monday.

The child is charged with murder. The judge ordered her to have a competency hearing.

At a news conference Monday afternoon Wickliffe Police Chief Randy Ice said the mother of the 11-year-old was babysitting Zuri at her home in the 1500 block of Ridgewick Drive in Wickliffe Friday, Feb. 6. and after falling asleep on the couch around 3 a.m. the child took Zuri upstairs and beat her to death.

Chief Ice says the child then brought the baby back downstairs and woke her mother up. Mom says she called 911 as soon as she saw Zuri -- her head was swollen and she was bleeding.

Paramedics rushed little Zuri to Lake West Hospital, then later airlifted her to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital. Police say Zuri died of extensive internal injuries.

Chief Ice says he's never seen anything this disturbing in his 30-year career. The department is also considering counseling for the officers who responded to the scene.

The juvenile's next court date has not been set.

A fund to help pay for little Zuri's funeral services has been established at Dollar Bank. Donations can be made in Zuri's name at any branch.
