Police officer involved in one of the many Friday morning accidents

PENINSULA, OH (WOIO) - A Peninsula Village police officer was involved in an early morning accident.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 6:40 a.m. on I-271 northbound in Summit County.

A Peninsula patrol car was parked off the roadway with emergency lights activated while investigating an unrelated crash that had just occurred.

Sergeant Daniel Renz was in the driver's seat during the impact. Zachary Woods, of Sterling, Ohio was in the back seat completing a statement in reference to his crash when Sarah Johnson of Norton was lost control her 2005 Honda, Accord and drove off the left side of the roadway and struck the patrol car.

Sergeant Renz was transported to Akron City Hospital with serious injuries.

Sarah Johnson was Med Evac (Air Lifted) to Akron City Hospital with critical injuries.

Zachary Woods was transported to Akron General Hospital with minor injuries.

Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in this crash.

This crash remains under investigation.
