A local man has been indicted for posing as a real estate agent, but not before police say he stole tens of thousands of dollars.
According to Cuyahoga County court records, Kenneth A. Williams has been indicted for grand theft.
Cleveland Police say Derrick Washington is one of his victims. Washington told 19 Action News he lost $17,000 that was supposed to be for renting and purchasing two area homes.
"I want my money back. It doesn't look like that's going to happen," Washington said. He said he never checked if Williams had credentials.
"He had a business card and him having the access codes is what led me to believe he was legit," said Washington.
Washington said he had just lost his longtime partner when the scam happened.
"I was devastated. I was grieving. I was going through it. He laid it on that smooth," Washington said.
Real estate scams are a big problem nationwide and they are common in our area. Police are still investigating but it looks like Williams targeted a number of people.
"He was very suave with it and convincing," Washington said, "It wasn't until after all the excuses started piling up that I realized something was fishy."
