AVON LAKE, OH (WOIO) - The snow we've seen this winter could be damaging your house. Ice dams can form quickly and cause problems for a long time.
Some Avon Lake homeowners found out the hard way. Their living room ceiling is water-logged and falling in because of a massive ice dam that formed off the vaulted ceiling.
"Mother Nature is asking your roof to do something it wasn't designed to do and that's hold water," said Tom Schlund from
Schlund's crew chipped away the ice, and soon the water started flowing off the roof instead of into the house.
Ice dams form when heat escapes due to poor insulation or not enough separation from living space to the roof. The snow melts but then hits the unheated overhang and freezes. Soon that ice builds into a dam so the water sits and eventually works its way into your house.
"We've seen entire houses get shut down by fire departments because so much water is running down the walls into the breaker boxes," said Schlund.
