PAINESVILLE, OH (WOIO) - The Lake County Sheriff's Office Heroin Task Force announced Tuesday that they executed search warrants at various retail stores and cash for gold establishments after a lengthy investigation.
In cooperation with local and state law enforcement agencies, they seized over $150,000 in U.S. currency. The prosecutor is reviewing charges for multiple counts of receiving stolen property, money laundering and engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity.
The Heroin Task Force was created by the Lake County Commissioners and the Lake County Sheriff's Office to criminally investigate the funding sources used by drug abusers. The money from the sale of personal items stolen from burglaries in homes and businesses is then used to buy heroin.
Business owners from Lake County were paid personal visits by the Task Force and received a detailed letter that explained the heroin epidemic and the effect on Lake County citizens.
They asked the businesses for their cooperation in reporting the attempted sale of suspicious or reported stolen property. Routine compliance checks were also done to insure compliance. They also warned that any persons and businesses that engaged in any illegal activities would be open to criminal prosecution.
