CANTON, OH (WOIO) - Four adults, four children and one firefighter was rushed to the hospital Tuesday evening after fire engulfed a Rachel St. NW apartment complex.

Canton firefighters got the call around 6 p.m. that the lower level of the large multi-unit apartment complex was on fire and smoke was filling the stairways.

When crews arrived there were children screaming and crying and a woman hanging out of a third story window on the north side of the building. On the south side of the building a man dropped his child from a third story window, the child was caught by a firefighter, the adult then jumped out and broke his ankle.

Two other children dropped out of a third floor window to the arms of waiting firefighters and their mother was taken down a ladder.

The fire was put out within minutes but the building remained full of smoke and heat. Damage is estimated at $200,000 to the structure and $50,000 to contents.

The fire is under investigation.
