19 Action News has been following 4-year-old Michael Reece Jr. since he suffered a traumatic brain injury at his father's Cleveland home back in January.
Police believe he was injured by his father's girlfriend, Crystal Anderson, who is facing nine criminal charges, including assault. His father, Michael Reece Sr., wasn't home at the time of the incident but is charged with child endangering.
For days earlier this year, it seemed as though Mikey might not survive, but he made it.
Reporter Scott Taylor had an exclusive interview with Mikey and his mother, Angel Flores.
"It's been a very long journey and to see everything he has gone through is one of the hardest things of my life," said Flores.
Wednesday is day eight at the Cleveland Clinic Children's Rehab Center for Mikey and his family.
Mikey just got his feeding tube removed. He is exceeding expectations from his medical staff and the hopes of his own mother. In fact, Mikey is doing so well doctors want to use him as a test case in medical journals to help other physicians heal kids with traumatic brain injuries.
"You never expect to see your child so weak. The first time I saw him, he couldn't hold up his head that day. That really killed me. And now he can sit up. He can play and talk. It's amazing where he is now," said Flores.
All Mikey wants to do now is meet his hero.
"I am going to see Mickey Mouse!" said Mikey.
His mother says a visit to Florida and Disney World is in the future, possibly this summer after Mikey has a full recovery.
