crews battled a fire at a junkyard near East 116th Street and Harvard Avenue late Monday afternoon.
When crews arrived, Buckeye Rivet's vacant one-story building at 4010 East 116th was completely engulfed in flames. It hadn't been used in four years.
"We were down at Edgewater Pier when we saw it coming across the Main Avenue Bridge on the Shoreway," said Kurt Voelkel, who could see smoke from the highway. "It was a thick, black plume of smoke. We saw fire. You could feel the heat over here on Harvard from it."
According to fire crews on scene, there were many old vehicles and tires on the property, both of which created massive amounts of smoke while burning.
Crews from 15 firetrucks battled the blaze from several different angles on the ground and in the air to prevent spreading.
By 7 p.m., the fire was under control. Firefighters remained on scene hours later to focus on hot spots.
No one was injured.
