Thousands gather to honor Lauren Hill

RAW: Public memorial service held for Lauren Hill in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, OH (WOIO) - A public memorial service was held tonight in Cincinnati for Lauren Hill, the Mount Saint Joseph University basketball player who captured the hearts of Ohioans and helped raise more than $1.5 million for cancer research.

Lauren gained international recognition in 2014 when she played her first Division III College Basketball game after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.

Lauren was diagnosed with DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma), a rare form of brain cancer, while she was still in high school. She had already committed to play for MSJ.

Determined to help her live out her dream of playing college ball, Mount St. Joseph coach Dan Benjamin got a special waiver from the NCAA to move up the team's season opener so that Lauren could play before her condition worsened.

Lauren was just 19-years-old when she lost her battle last Friday.
