ASHTABULA COUNTY, OH (WOIO) - A Cuyahoga County Sheriff's van transporting inmates was among the vehicles involved in a deadly multi-vehicle pileup in Conneaut.

It happened Wednesday just before noon, at State Route 7 and Welton in Ashtabula County.

According to the Ashtabula County Coroners office the driver of a pick up, Vernon Dell, 79, of Monroe Township, died at Brown Memorial hospital after being transported from the scene.

Officials think Dell may have had a medical emergency causing him to run into the Sheriff's van. The van was headed to Cleveland from the Lake Erie Correctional Institution.

The Coroner has not determined yet if he died from the "medical emergency" or from his injuries related to the crash.

None of the inmates escaped and none were seriously injured.

The accident remains under investigation.
