A man who refers to himself as DeShawn surrendered after being involved in a standoff with Cleveland Police that lasted more than 18 hours. The incident began at 7 p.m. on Saturday night in the 4700 block of Manufacturing Road off Industrial Parkway.
Just before he surrendered to authorities at 2:40 p.m. Sunday, Deshawn called the 19 Action News news desk and spoke to our assignment editor Kalenah. He stated that he was alone, scared, and without any idea of what to do about the situation, which he says was blown out of proportion.
Deshawn said he had already spoken to the CPD negotiator and other news stations, but wasn't ready to leave the building.
During the conversation Kalenah listened to Deshawn, then spoke candidly about it being okay to end the standoff sooner than later. Moments later Cleveland Police confirmed that he had in fact been taken into custody without any issues.
Cleveland Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Pillow said that officers were giving Deshawn the time he needed to end things peacefully. Authorities believed that Deshawn was suffering from a mental illness and report that he threatened suicide.
Police stated that their preliminary investigation revealed that he may have fired a handgun into the air at the onset of the standoff.
Cleveland SWAT called to assist during the incident. No one was injured.
