SUMMIT COUNTY, OH (WOIO) - The attack on Kent Police Officer Sarah Berkey by her ex-boyfriend Adam Jovicic was brutal. She told police he broke down the front door of her Munroe Falls home overnight in March.

She said he started beating and choking her, then pulled clumps of her hair out of her head.

During the struggle, Jovicic got distracted by Berkey's dog when the animal tried to passively intervene. Berkey's pet gave her an opportunity to break free and escape into the bedroom.

She picked up her gun. Jovicic followed, grabbing the muzzle and trying to turn it against her.

She yanked on the weapon and it broke the grasp of her ex. Then she fired two shots, hitting him in the abdomen.

Jovicic was alive when police arrived and put in handcuffs.

He later died at the hospital.

Jovicic was married at the time of his death. He and Berkey broke up a year earlier, according to Berkey, after she discovered he was living with another woman.

Berkey and Jovicic also had a physical altercation at the home last November, which she never reported to police.

Officer Berkey has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the shooting death of Jovicic.
