hosted its first citywide baby shower on Saturday. The public was invited to donate items for opiate-dependent mothers so they can focus on their babies and recovery.
The gifts collected at the shower will be distributed to the mothers during their follow-up medical visits.
Volunteers collected needed items Saturday morning.
Last year, MetroHealth doctors and nurses delivered and cared for more than 100 babies born to opiate-dependent mothers. Many of these babies are born addicted too, and MetroHealth provides the extra care months after delivery.
Using a multidisciplinary approach, the mothers are provided with prenatal care, nutrition counseling, psychiatric services and educational programs in drug dependency, child birth and child care.
Friends and supporters of The MetroHealth Foundation helped organize the baby shower as a way to support some of the most vulnerable children in the community.
