Know the drill before you grill. From hot dogs to burgers, there are safety tips to follow to make sure your Fourth of July feast turns out just right.

"Make sure children and pets are far enough away from anything that's flammable," explains Doug Turner, with Parma Fire Department.

When using propane, check major connection points between the propane tank hose and the regulator and cylinder where hose connects to the burners. Look for gas leaks. Use a spray bottle with light soap and water to clean the hose. Then turn on the propane.

"You don't want a lot of grease build-up 'cause the grease could catch on fire," Turner explains.

If there's a leak, you'll see bubbles around the hose. Don't use it.

For charcoal grills, only use a charcoal starter fluid. Never add liquid or other flammable liquids to the fire. Keep it away from children.

"When you're done with the charcoal grilling, you want to make sure you take the hot ashes, put them in a container, a metal container, and dispose of them. But never dump them out somewhere," says Turner.

If you're using electrical charcoal starters, which don't use fire, be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.

When it comes to raw meat, don't cross contaminate! Keep your proteins on separate plates to avoid the risk of getting sick.
