CANAL FULTON, OH (WOIO) -

Officers with the Canal Fulton Police Department made an arrest in an unsolved arson case from Thursday July 9.

Victor Librado Murillo, 19, of Canal Fulton, was booked into the Stark County Jail Friday on one count of arson and one count of vandalism.

On July 9, 2015 at 1:45 a.m. Ptl. Stephen Ruthrauff was on routine patrol when he discovered The Canal Grille on S. Locust St. NW on fire. The officer got out of his car and put the fire out with a dry chemical extinguisher. Ptl. Ruthrauff is credited with saving the structure.

The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was intentionally set and posted a $5,000 reward.

Murillo was in custody less than 24 hours later.

The motive of the crime is still under investigation, however, Murillo was a former employee of the Canal Grille and was terminated approximately two years ago. Officers are also trying to determine if there is a link between the arson and several thefts from vehicles and vandalism that occurred around the same time.

Police say the building was also spray painted with threatening messages..
