LORAIN, OH (WOIO) - Republic Steel is temporarily idling hot-end operations, which will result in about 125 layoffs, affecting production, maintenance, support functions and salary employees at the plant.
The Lorain bar and rolling mills are not impacted.
An unexpected decline in the energy market has resulted in reduced customer demand. With no anticipated timing on when the market or customer demand will change, a Republic Steel spokesperson says they were forced to temporarily idle the plant.
Officials hope to resume hot-end operations in Lorain in the future.
The layoffs will be staggered over the next couple of weeks.
