SOLON, OH (WOIO) - On Wednesday, Nestle held a grand opening for its new research and development facility in Solon, after working on the multimillion dollar project for the past two years. Company reps say the 144,000 square foot facility demonstrates their commitment to supporting global product innovation to meet the shifting food preferences of consumers.
The facility is the culmination of more than a $50 million investment by Nestle to focus on research and development of frozen and chilled foods. Company officials say it will help Nestle play an increasingly important role in encouraging healthier lifestyles through product innovation, as well as renovations that reduce sodium or saturated fat, incorporate more vegetables, or offer gluten free and high-protein options to help transform the way the world enjoys frozen and chilled foods.
Company officials say the launch is a significant expansion of Nestle's already strong presence in Ohio and establishes Solon as the center of excellence for the largest frozen and chilled foods market in the world. With the 2014 move of Nestle Pizza to Solon and the opening of this facility, Nestle now employs more than 2,200 in the Cleveland area, 3,400 in Ohio and more than 51,000 in the United States.
The grand opening included remarks by Nestle executives and local government officials, a tour of the facilities, plus a taste test of Nestle products enhanced at the center.
