MEDINA, OH (WOIO) - Medina Police are investigating the discovery of a child's decomposing body Wednesday.
Police say a cable company employee found the child in a crib inside an apartment at the Forest Meadows complex on East Reagan Parkway.
"This is a very difficult case from the emotions of everyone involved," Medina Police Chief Patrick Berarducci said.
Police identified the child as Ember Warfel, who was born in October 2013.
Authorities do not know when or how Ember died.
Police say the child's father, Eric M. Warfel was out with his seven-year-old daughter when the discovery was made.
"Our detectives went to Crocker Park and he was arrested there while getting into his car. Westlake police assisted," Chief Berarducci said.
The seven-year-old is now in the care of family members.
Wednesday night, neighbors showed their support for the child, leaving flowers and loving messages in its honor.
"I'm a mother, a human, and God created us for love. This is absolutely tragic," neighbor Anne Smith said.
"We had issues with smells here. We just thought it was cooking. We used incense. Didn't think it was anything like this," neighbor Jeremy King said.
Eric Warfel is charged with abuse of a corpse. Police say more charges are expected.
Medina police believe the child's mother is in New York City and are getting help from the NYPD to find her.
