LORAIN, OH (WOIO) -

A Tuesday afternoon home invasion in the 1900 block of E. 40th St. in Lorain left the intruder shot.

Alejandro Melendez called 911 just before 5 p.m. to say he had shot a person who assaulted him during an attempted home invasion.

When officers arrived Melendez told them he just returned from a trip abroad when he was assaulted near his front door by a stranger. The assault continued inside of the home and Melendez says he was able to grab a gun that was kept near the front door, and shot the man several times in self-defense.

The man shot, later identified as 34-year-old Glenn Smith Jr., was found inside 1921 E. 40th St., and had in his possession items that indicate that he had been there to commit a home invasion/robbery.

Smith was taken to Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No charges have been filed against Melendez at this time. Police say it appears he shot Smith in self defense.

The investigation continues.
