The Washington Redskins defeated the Cleveland Browns in their first preseason game, 20-17.
Cleveland Browns football has returned, the Browns took the field against the Washington Redskins on Thursday in the first preseason game of 2015. The Browns also debuted their new-look uniforms, wearing the white on white combination.
Quarterback Josh McCown played in one series, in that series he made the most of it, going 5-of-5 for 33 yards and a touchdown. McCown found Travis Benjamin in the back of the endzone.
Redskins wide receivers took advantage of Justin Gilbert early, but could not capitalize on it. In the first quarter, Pierre Garson broke free of Gilbert and had a wide open touchdown, but dropped the ball. Later on,
Johnny Manziel would finish the first half, throwing 7-of-10 for 42 yards, and adding a touchdown on the ground (12 yards). Manziel impressed early, escaping sacks, not forcing the ball and looking through progressions instead of just taking off with the ball.
The Redskins would hit two field goals and Kirk Cousins would score a rushing touchdown. The Browns led at halftime 14-13.
The only scoring for the Browns in the third quarter came from the leg of Mayfield native Carey Spear, who hit a 47-yard field goal. The Redskins took their first lead of the game on a Trey Williams, 1-yard touchdown, 20-17.
The Browns ranked dead last against the run last season, Thursday night they gave up 154 rushing yard. The Browns only had 45 rushing yards.
New Browns kicker Andy Lee had 4 punts inside the 20-yard line, including 1 inside the 5-yard line.
Johnson Bademosi and Tank Carder each forced a fumble for the Browns defense.
The Browns will take on the Buffalo Bills next Thursday (August 20).
