Man arrested during bomb threat at Westlake hotel

WESTLAKE, OH (WOIO) - Westlake police received a computer-generated phone call around 1:30 a.m. stating that a bomb had been planted in a room at the Courtyard by Marriott on Sperry Dr.

Westlake and Bay Village police officers and Westlake Fire Dept. were dispatched. RTA PD sent their explosives detection dog and handler. North Olmsted PD also assisted by checking on a tired driver at a Center Ridge Rd. gas station while WPD units were tied up.

A second computer-generated call was received around 20 minutes later and the caller stated that there were four armed men in the hotel. 90-100 guests were evacuated to a nearby restaurant while the building was searched.

The all clear was given at 3:40 a.m. after nothing suspicious was found.

An intoxicated guest, 39-year-old Jonathan Simpson of Kingsport, TN, was arrested for misconduct at an emergency.

He is currently in the Westlake City Jail awaiting a bond hearing.

Police say there is no connection between Simpson and the calls.
