Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine and new Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan are far from strangers, in fact, Pettine has worked under Ryan from 2002-2013 when Pettine left the Jets to become the Bills defensive coordinator.
Both Ryan and Pettine worked with the Baltimore Ravens from 2002-2008 (Ryan started in 1999). Rex would get his first head coaching job with the New York Jets in 2009, where he would bring in Pettine as his "right hand man" giving Pettine his first defensive coordinator position.
On Thursday, the two will play each other while head coaches in the NFL. The Bills come to Cleveland to take on the Browns in their second preseason game, "You know, I knew he’d get to this spot, there’s no question. I think his background…Our backgrounds are very similar, both our dads are legendary coaches. He’s smart, knew the game extremely well, hardworking and dedicated and passionate. So I knew he’d get this opportunity. I was hoping he hires my son one day," Bills head coach Rex Ryan said about Mike Pettine's career.
The two teams practiced/scrimmaged together on Monday and Tuesday.
For the Browns: DB Justin Gilbert left practice on Tuesday to a injury and may not play, along with wide receiver Terrell Pryor, who is dealing with a hamstring injury. 20 Browns players missed practice on Thursday, updates on who will play Thursday night will be determined hours before the game.
For the Bills: Running back LeSean McCoy went down for the Bills in practice on Tuesday, and will not play Thursday, but is expected to be back for Week 1 of the regular season.
Johnny Manziel, who impressed in the first preseason game will likely get the same amount of reps, if not more with quarterback Connor Shaw out indefinitely with a thumb injury.
