Group urges Corps to deny IKEA request

Group urges Corps to deny IKEA request

A local group is hoping the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers denies IKEA's application for a permit to build a store in Brooklyn.

The stakeholder group for The Cuyahoga River Area of Concern (AOC) sent a letter to the Corps of Engineers on August 11.

The group claims an IKEA store would permanently damage one of the last and largest wetlands in the Big Creek watershed.

IKEA has plans to build a store on more than 15 acres of forested wetland in Brooklyn.

AOC officials say the store would also cause flooding problems and degrade water quality in Big Creek and the Cuyahoga River.

The letter also asks the Corps to hold a public hearing on the matter, and offers to work with IKEA on a different redevelopment opportunity in Brooklyn.

IKEA officials say they have held a public comment session on the proposed build and are aware of AOC's concerns. They say the final decision rests with the Army Corps of Engineers.
