Student's death prompts Mount Union to cancel classes

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Classes at the University of Mount Union were canceled Thursday after a student took her own life Wednesday night.

Officials say Sydney Breyer committed suicide. Alliance police and the Stark County coroner's office are investigating the Springboro, OH freshman's death.

The university released a statement and is offering counseling to students.

"We are very saddened by the loss of freshman Sydney Breyer, a dear member of the Mount Union family. At this time of significant grief, we are focusing our attention on offering support to the Breyer family and our campus community. We have canceled all classes for today, and counseling and pastoral services will be available in Dewald Chapel from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, all campus offices will remain open and faculty and staff will be on hand to offer additional support to our students. We expect that students will gather together in remembrance, mourning and support throughout the coming days – both in organized and casual ways – and counseling will continue to be made available to those in need. We appreciate the continued outpouring of support shown to the family and our students, faculty and staff, and ask that our community be given the time to grieve and heal."
