ROCKY RIVER, OH (WOIO) - Thieves are targeting homes in Rocky River.
Police say they're trying to break into houses, and it seems to be a pattern in other suburbs on the west side, too.
Police say the suspect or suspects try to enter houses at night, even when people are home.
They are cutting off screens to windows and doors to try to get inside.
Now residents are having a hard time sleeping at night.
On the south side of Rocky River, everyone seems to know their neighbors. Now they're watching out for each other even more.
"Neighbors have all been talking and texting and getting the word out," said one neighbor who didn't want to be identified.
Police say thieves have broken into or tried to break into several homes off Wooster Road.
We spoke with one woman who says her house was targeted. She also asked not to be identified.
"They had to go on my back porch patio enclosure to look through the window that had sheers on it to see that there was a purse and a computer there. So
they attempted to break into the dining room window, but they couldn't lift it up, it was really heavy," she said.
Police say two cars were stolen, but they have since recovered them.
This weekend, they say thieves stole several items from unlocked vehicles.
"All my neighbors on my street, we don't know what to do, we are scared," one neighbor said.
John Stroh says someone tried to break into his house, too.
"Our screens were pushed up, but our windows were locked. And no one could get in," he said.
He can't believe the thieves are bold enough to try to break in when people are at home.
"You just don't think that stuff is going to happen. I was shocked," Stroh said.
Some neighbors want to see more police patrolling the streets. In the meantime, they're doing what they can to stay safe.
They're making sure to lock their doors and keep the lights on. Some have even installed new security systems.
Avon Police say they have also seen an uptick in home burglaries.
Rocky River Police say several other west side suburbs it may be experiencing similar cases.
